I usually spend most of my evenings watching movies or playing online poker. It happens that me and my buddies gather to play some real life poker, but I prefer to just chill on my own in front of the tv or computer screen. After having worked all day I am too tired to hang out with friends too often, and all I want to do is to rest my eyes on something which doesn’t force me to think particularly hard. Either that or to play poker in order to win some money, in order to not having to work so much!
But lately I have picked up reading. I had never thought that I would use that sentence, but it is true. It began with a friend of mine recommending me a thriller, which was so much better than I ever thought literature could be. I started reading it with disinterest, but after about two chapters I was so hooked by it that I actually didn’t play poker or watch a movie in the evening. I just read. When I had finished the book, the same friend suggested that I’d read the following book, which evidently was a continuation of the first one. I tried hard not to show my friend how excited I felt to hear that the adventure wasn’t over, and secretly I bought the book in the nearest bookshop. The two coming evenings I just read and read. Even at work, I sneaked into the bathroom ever so often just to read, and see how it would all end.
In time I had read all the books written by the author, and when I in interviews read about authors the he liked, I started to read them as well. Of course some of them are better and some of them are worse, but ever once in a while I am amazed by how great and thrilling literature can be. I have the feeling that my imagination has improved a lot since I started taking an interest in books. My parents are overwhelmed by this development, and I shake my head while they call me to ask what I am reading. I think that they feel some kind of pride that I don’t just work and sit in front of different kinds of screens all the time.
And to be honest with you, in some sense, so am I…

After a long working week at the office, the holiday is slowly coming up. And as I have waited!
I am going to the country side this weekend with my dear family. I have been looking forward to it for quite sometime – lying in the hammock, sleeping in everyday, hanging out at the beach, eating delicious food and taking long walks in the forest nearby. Maybe even taking a swim or practise those diving skills. After a long winter, that is just what I need.
There is just one slight problem, which I don’t have the heart to discuss with anyone in my family: There is no Internet. And with no Internet, no online poker. Just three months ago, I could do without (and I will probably have to this weekend as well), but it is a large difference between then and now. I have never played this much poker, and never had so much fun online either. I always thought that online gambling was for isolated, asocial people, but now I realize that if it is, then I am one of them.
It is just so much fun to play poker – much more so online than IRL, by the way – and I am afraid that spending time at the summerhouse just wont be as fun as it would have been if I wasn’t thinking about ways to go online all the time.
I have even been checking the bus routes to see whether I can get into the city to find myself an Internet café in an easy way. The only problem is that I am sure that my family will object to me sneaking away to play poker every now and then. Maybe they don’t believe as strongly as I do that I someday will win the big bucks. I am sure that if I did though, they wouldn’t mind my playing so much from that moment on.

Anyway, apart from my poker problem I am sure I will have a great weekend at the cottage. The weather is supposed to be great, and since it has been raining for quite some time I can’t wait to just lay in the sun for hours. I just hope that the weathermen were right in their reports. Otherwise I can really start looking for that Internet café with good conscience…
